how to add individual error bars in excel

Re: Individual Error Bars

I'm not sure I understand what you are having difficulty with. What do you mean by "each bar needs to have its own individual error bar" and why do you believe that Excel will not allow you to do this without setting each bar to its own series? I don't use bar/column charts very often, but, when I have had bar/column charts and added error bars, Excel has automatically added an error bar for each data point in the series. When I have needed different values for each data point, I have needed to calculate those error values in the spreadsheet and then, using the "custom value" option for the error bars, tell Excel where to find the calculated error values (step by step instructions here: https://support.office.com/en-us/art...5-864049a145f0 under "change the error amount options"). If I had to guess, I would guess that you are unaware of this "custom value" option, but I cannot be sure that is the case. Did I guess right, or is there something else I am missing about your question?

Re: Individual Error Bars

I have all the calculated standard deviation values, and I can put each of those onto an individual bar using the custom value feature, as you say.
However, doing this requires creating 24 separate series which makes the graph difficult to read, as the legend now has 24 separate colours in it.

Re: Individual Error Bars

I don't recall Excel ever forcing me to create 24 separate data series to do this, so I don't have a good guess as to why Excel is forcing you to create 24 separate data series.

I cannot upload a sample file, but here's how I created a quick, random test file for adding custom error bars to a data series:
1) Enter category labels in column A (A1=a, A2=b, and so on to A6=f)
2) Enter =RAND() into B1 and copy down and across to I6 (4 columns for series data, 4 columns for error data).
3) Select A1:E6 and insert a clustered column chart.
4) Select the chart area and add error bars with percentage (in my copy of Excel, this added error bars to all points in all data series).
5) Select series 1 error bars -> format series -> custom value -> specify value -> select F1:F6 (for both positive and negative error bars) Repeat for each data series.

You should have a clustered column chart with 4 data series and a custom error bar on each data point. Will Excel allow you to create that chart? What is different about my example and your actual spreadsheet?

Re: Individual Error Bars

That worked great. Not entirely sure what I was exactly doing differently before. But no matter, thank you!
